Martin says it would be unwise to call a general election in 2019 given the uncertainty surrounding Brexit

The Fianna Fáil leader Mícheál Martin has said that his part has to be realistic in their approach and that it would be unwise to call a general election in 2019.

Mr Martin who was speaking at the party’s Ard Fheis in Dublin, over the weekend, said that his party must support the current Government as the uncertainty surrounding Brexit continues.

Although the Fianna Fáil leader said they would be looking for an early General Election in normal circumstances, he retirated that his party must continue to support the Fine Gael minority led Government as it is in the best interests of the Irish people, given that an election at this present time would be damaging and would leave the country exposed.

Mr Martin who has criticised the Government’s handling over real issues affecting the Irish people, also said that his party has a plan but for now they will give the Government space in order to facilitate Brexit.

It is believed that Mr Martin’s comments come after a number of party members had expressed their desire to call a general election in the immediate future.
