The Chair of the Elders, Mary Robinson, has accused Saudi Arabia and its allies of taking the COP28 climate talks hostage, reports RTE.
She expressed her concern that the summit is not doing enough to stay within the 1.5 degree Celsius warming threshold.
Robinson called on countries with the capacity to ensure that this summit’s outcome is historic to take action with urgency and ambition.
She pointed out that the nations hindering progress are those with the highest stakes in fossil fuels but also have the most abundant resources to act, reports RTE.
However, Robinson also stated that Saudi Arabia is not the only country obstructing progress.
The United States, China, the European Union, and India are all content to hide in the shadows, according to her accusation.
“There is still time for these countries to step up with the courageous leadership required to tackle this existential threat,” she added, reports RTE.
