Referendums to be held on women in the home and idea of what a family is to be held in March 2024

The government has confirmed plans to hold a referendum on the constitutional reference to family and care in March 2024, reports RTE.

The proposed referendum, which will be held on March 8, International Women’s Day, would expand the constitutional definition of family beyond marriage.

There will also be a new reference to carers, recognizing all those who provide care and removing references to women’s responsibilities at home from the constitution, reports RTE.

In making the announcement, Integration Minister Roderick O’Gorman said that “a woman’s place is where ever she wants it to be”, reports RTE.

In the 39th Amendment, which deals with the definition of family, it is proposed to change Art. 41 Section 1 Section 1 adds the words “whether founded on marriage or on other durable relationships”, reports RTE.

He also proposed to delete the words “on which the Family is founded” from Article 41.3.1, reports RTE.
