Massive backlash to Varadkar who says no one has veto on who moves into a community

The Department of Integration and the owner of a Mayo hotel that was supposed to shelter applicants for international protection are having “ongoing” conversations, according to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.

Outside the former JJ Gannon’s hotel on Ballinrobe’s Main Street in Co Mayo, there has been a protest, reports RTE.

The Department of Integration is allegedly being pressed by protestors for guarantees that their plans to host fifty asylum seekers there will not go forward.

Speaking on RTÉ’s This Week, Mr Varadkar said: “I also need to be very clear. Nobody in a free society, nobody in a democracy has a right to exercise a veto on who moves into their area or community. That doesn’t just apply to international protection,” reports RTE.
