‘Very challenging week’ for hospitals ahead as flu cases expected to peak, says HSE

The Health Service Executive’s Chief Executive has issued a warning, stating that hospitals across are expected to experience “a very challenging week” due to the likelihood of seasonal illnesses like influenza, reports RTE.

Speaking on RTÉ’s This Week, Bernard Gloster stated that the peak of the flu season is predicted for this coming week, with additional effects anticipated the following week.

“Week 51 of the year [2023] saw combined influenza notified cases of about 1,830. Week one of this year, not yet fully complete on figures, [is] 2,644,” reports RTE.

“Based on all the information available to me we’re going to hit the height of the flu this week. That will tail on into the following week so we are expecting significant pressure on the system but at the moment we are holding relatively well,” Bernard Gloster added, reports RTE.
