The family of boxer John Cooney, who passed away after a title fight in Belfast, remembered him as their “champion,” full of energy, laughter, and love. The 28-year-old from Galway died a week after sustaining an injury during his Celtic super-featherweight title defense.
His death was confirmed in a statement from his promoter, Mark Dunlop, on behalf of the Cooney family and his fiancée, Emmaleen. John had been treated at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital for a brain bleed following his loss to Welsh boxer Nathan Howells at Ulster Hall on 1 February.
Hundreds attended his funeral Mass at the Church of St John the Apostle in Knocknacarra, Galway, including his parents, Hughie and Tina, his fiancée Emmaleen, and brothers Conor and Aaron. An Irish tricolour covered his coffin, alongside a photo of John, with floral tributes placed around the altar.
