The funeral has been held for the four-year-old boy who tragically died after being struck by a vehicle in Mullingar on Easter Monday, reports RTE.

This afternoon, hundreds gathered at the Islamic Cultural Society Centre in Mullingar to offer prayers for the young child.

Abdur Rehman, aged four, will be laid to rest later today at Newcastle cemetery in Dublin, reports RTE.

Family friends spoke yesterday of the deep sorrow they felt and described Abdur as a child adored by everyone who met him.

The accident happened just steps from the family’s home in Farranshock, a recently built residential area on Mullingar’s outskirts. Abdur had celebrated his fourth birthday just days earlier, reports RTE.

Family friend Naveed Iqbal shared that Abdur hadn’t even had the chance to open all his birthday gifts.

“They were keeping some for him so he could open one every day,” he explained, reports RTE.

Mr Iqbal added that the family had only recently relocated to the area. “The family just moved here a few months ago. We helped them move. They are a hardworking family, same as everyone here. It’s so sad for everyone.”

He said that Abdur’s father, who is originally from Pakistan, has lived in Ireland for two decades, while his mother is studying to become a doctor.

The family had also just welcomed a newborn baby in recent weeks, reports RTE.
