McDonald claims that her leadership of Sinn Féin is more crucial than ever

According to Mary Lou McDonald, the president of Sinn Féin, her role as the party’s leader is “more important than ever,” reports Breaking News.

Following the last Irish general election, Ms. McDonald has come under fire for her party’s failure to stop political heavyweights Fianna Fail and Fine Gael from seeking another coalition administration.

Sinn Fein secured 39 seats in the Dáil, ahead of Fine Gael’s 38 seats, while Fianna Fail secured 48 seats, reports Breaking News.

Nonetheless, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are anticipated to come to an agreement with other parties to form the next government, as 88 seats are required for a majority.

No one is “more disappointed than her,” Ms. McDonald told Belfast’s media on Monday, but she is adamant on leading a “knuckling down,” reports Breaking News.

Additionally, she underlined that Sinn Fein won more seats, which she said validates a “fundamental transformation of southern politics.”

“Our objective, however, had been to get into government, and we fell short of that on this occasion and as the leader of Sinn Fein, there is nobody more disappointed by that than me,” she said, reports Breaking News.

“I have been out and about since the election, and I’ve been talking to lots and lots of people who still are counting on Sinn Fein to represent them, and counting on it to get into government, to really bring about the kind of change that they wish to see, and they are disappointed. My leadership, for me now, is more important than ever in terms of knuckling down and getting the job done. We have made great progress. We have we have not reached our destination yet, but we will. I think we had a very successful campaign … in some ways we may have won the campaign, but we didn’t win the election,” reports Breaking News.
