McEntee slammed as Garda College applicants are left waiting as new applicants admitted without complete vetting

After An Garda Síochána chose to accept 2024 applicants while their vetting was still in progress, applicants for the Garda College from the 2022 and 2023 processes who are still awaiting the completion of their vetting have expressed their anger, reports Breaking News.

A number of contestants from 2022 and 2023 got in touch with Breaking News, to voice their annoyance at the modification, which they claim they were unaware of.

Emails to 2024 candidates [seen in the photo] acknowledged that their verification was still in progress but congratulated them for being accepted to the Garda College in Templemore, reports Breaking News.

The messages state “your application process is now in the final stages of Garda vetting, enabling us now to offer you a trainee position”.

They add: “This vetting process will complete as soon as possible and may extend into the training period”. It adds that the vetting process must be completed “by the end of the training period”, reports Breaking News.

An candidate who asked to remain anonymous stated: “I’ve been waiting for verification for more than a year. They won’t get in touch with you or provide you with any updates.

“They’ve now brought in a new system where they’ve decided only applicants in the 2024 competition can get into the Garda College without being vetted,” reports Breaking News.

Online tests, a written interview, a fitness test, a medical check, and three local station interviews are all part of the demanding application procedure.

The applicant added: “I can’t wrap my head around the logic behind it, but it’s only being offered to the 2024 candidates who are being let in on a ‘conditional offer of employment’ provided your vetting is completed while you’re in the college. I’m assuming all the resources of vetting will be prioritised for the trainees who are in the college to get their vetting sorted quickly. They won’t want a situation where it’s time for them to graduate and their vetting is incomplete… so now the people who have gone through everything are waiting and have been forgotten,” reports Breaking News.

As attempts to expand the force to the government’s aim of 15,000 members continued to fail, the number of gardaí decreased throughout the summer.

Over the past two years, more and more qualified applicants have been declining spots at the Garda College, despite the force’s annual goal of recruiting 200.

Others have been left waiting in spite of this, reports Breaking News.
