Up to 450 couples across Manchester and Edinburgh are taking part in the trial, which will run for two years.
The gel is dispensed from a tube similar to toothpaste and applied topically on the skin of the back and shoulders.
Early indications show that the compound quite effectively reduces sperm count, so scientists are hopeful of a positive outcome, and the ultimate commercial viability of the product.
