Medics worried as new variant of Covid-19 confirmed in Ireland

The first cases of a worrying new variant of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Ireland.

The two BA.4 cases were seen here earlier this month.

They were identified from whole genome sequencing carried out on a portion of the virus cases confirmed during the week of May 7.

BA.4 is a highly transmissible subline of Omicron which is currently the dominant Covid strain in Ireland.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reclassified BA.4 and another Omicron sublineage, BA.5, from variants of interest to variants of concern on May 12.

They were first seen in South Africa in January and February this year, where they have become dominant.
