Mel Gibson will return to Co Meath to celebrate Braveheart 30th anniversary

Acclaimed Hollywood actor Mel Gibson is expected to return to County Meath next month to help mark the 30th anniversary of the film Braveheart, reports Breaking News.

The American actor will be staying in Trim and autographing posters in support of the Irish Equity Benevolent Fund during the King John’s Summer Prom Festival, scheduled to run in the historic town from August 8th to 10th.

Gibson and several family members will reside at a private location in the county, according to festival organiser Eric Lawlor, reports Breaking News.

Lawlor has a personal connection to the film, as his late brother Sean portrayed Malcolm Wallace in the Oscar-winning movie.

“This news is just fantastic,” said Lawlor, reports Breaking News.

“Dave O’Hara, who also starred in Braveheart, was a personal friend of my brother Sean and so he got in touch with Mel and persuaded him to come to Ireland. He said ‘Mel, you gotta do this for the 30th anniversary of Braveheart’ – and so he is coming for the weekend. The timing was perfect as he will leave Trim and travel on to Rome where he is making his latest film,” reports Breaking News.

Gibson’s trip will include reunions with many other Braveheart cast members who will also be attending the event. He is expected to enjoy several concerts and a special screening of the film on Saturday night before departing Meath on Sunday.

Since filming Braveheart, Gibson has maintained a connection to Trim and was granted the title of ‘Freeman of Trim’. He also sent a video message to the town to mark the film’s 25th anniversary, reports Breaking News.

The international blockbuster was up for 10 Academy Awards and took home five, including best picture, best make-up, best cinematography, best sound editing, and best director for Gibson.

On Saturday, August 9th, Gibson is scheduled to sign 200 posters at Trim Castle Hotel in support of the Irish Equity Benevolent Fund, but Lawlor advises fans not to expect long visits with the star, reports Breaking News.

“It will be a quick in and out here as we have to get 200 posters signed in two hours but there will be, no doubt, other opportunities to get a selfie with him,” he laughed, reports Breaking News.

The King John’s Summer Prom Festival promises a packed weekend, featuring appearances by actor Patrick Bergin, local vocalist Leah Barniville, and the Irish Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Niall O’Sullivan, reports Breaking News.
