Messy situation: Barcelona and Lionel Messi could face legal battle as player asks to leave club

A legal battle could potentially become the centre of world football as world superstar Lionel Messi has asked to leave Barcelona.

In a move that has rocked the Catalan giants, their star player has requested that he leave the club after becoming unhappy at how the club is currently being ran.

The Argentinian has reportedly asked to leave the club on a free transfer after dismal season for the Spanish side which saw them lose their La Liga crown and get hammered 8-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter finals.

Although Messi has a clause in his contract that can allow him to leave for free at the end of each season if chooses to do so, the superstar footballer could find himself at the centre of a legal battle as the Spanish giants are arguing that the specific clause expired in June and therefore any potential suitors should pay the player’s eye watering €700m release clause.

According to Sky Sports news, the club and player are currently in disagreement over the arrangement as Messi is arguing that the club should honour the agreement as the football season was extended until August due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The situation which has put a number of Europe’s top clubs on alert apparently came to a head after new Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman held discussions with the player this week.

It is reported that Messi has become unsatisfied in the direction where the club is heading.

He is also thought to be unhappy with Koeman’s plans following their meeting this week.
