Met Eireann issues Orange Warning for sixteen counties as severe thunderstorms are likely to develop throughout the day

The national forecaster has issued an Orange Warning for 16 counties, as severe thunderstorms are likely to develop today.

The warning covers the entire Leinster province plus counties Cavan, Monaghan, Waterford, and Tipperary.

Motorists in particular are advised to exercise extreme caution during thunderstorms, as they can develop quite quickly and bring down heavy downpours of rain or hail, and strong gusts of wind in a matter of seconds.

The outlook for today’s weather is for a largely dry day, with some brief and isolated showers with strong possibility of storms in the afternoon and early evening.
