Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning due to a spell of extremely (for Ireland) cold weather forecast for the next few days. The warning will be in place at 6am on Tuesday morning and remain in effect until 6pm on Saturday.
The national forecaster says that temperatures may drop down to lows of -5C in parts, with the likelihood of wintry showers of sleet and snow across the west and north of the country.
Widespread frost formation is likely to cause hazardous driving conditions so motorists are advised to be cautious on the roads, specially while driving during hours of darkness.
