The national forecaster is predicting nighttime temperatures as low as -3C this week, with wintry showers and overnight frost expected.
Northern and western areas of the country will be worst affected by the cold spell, particularly on high ground.
The south and southeast will remain relatively mild and dry, with good sunny spells and daytime temperatures reaching 8C.
The outlook is for a cold but mostly dry few days, but a band of rain is expected by Friday evening.
