Met Eireann warn that 16c ‘mini heatwave’ plunge into big freeze

In Ireland, March is frequently referred to be the month of numerous weather conditions, and this year is no exception, reports The Mirror.

The weather is delivering its typical mix of shocks as the nation gets closer to the St. Patrick’s Day bank holiday weekend: one day it will be warm and springlike, and then it will turn cold again.

With frost, colder air, and even the potential for snow in the coming days, Met Eireann has issued a sharp warning that the unusually warm weather will soon give way to a drastic decrease in temperature, reports The Mirror.

There will be what seems like a “heatwave” in some parts of Ireland this weekend, with temperatures reaching an amazing 16C in some places on Sunday- warmer than Barcelona and other regions of Spain, where temperatures are only expected to reach 14C that day. Ireland will enjoy the beautiful sunlight as well.

The national forecaster, however, is warning people to exercise caution since the weather will drastically change in the early part of next week. According to Met Eireann’s most recent forecast, colder air will move in from the north starting on Monday. Highs throughout the day will be between 6 and 8 degrees Celsius, but after nightfall, the temperature will drop to as low as -1 degrees Celsius with occasional frost, reports The Mirror.

There is even a risk of snow in certain places on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to weather models, which are notoriously unpredictable.

A northeasterly wind, which will control the weather pattern until mid-March, is responsible for the abrupt change. modest-pressure systems will be repelled by high pressure close to Iceland, allowing colder weather to settle across Ireland with comparatively modest rainfall, reports The Mirror.

The national forecaster said from Monday, March 10 to Sunday, March 16: “A northeasterly airflow is forecast over Ireland with high pressure slow moving near Iceland, keeping low pressure systems to the south and southeast. This will bring cooler conditions, with temperatures slightly below normal, but also low amounts of precipitation in most areas. Frosty nights and mornings are possible.”

However, a change in airflow may result in somewhat milder temperatures and more stable circumstances starting on Monday, March 17. It also stated: “Quite settled weather is forecast to continue, with high pressure to the north or northeast keeping low pressure to the south. With a change to a more east to southeast airflow generally, temperatures are expected to recover, becoming slightly higher than average. Rainfall is forecast to be near or below normal,” reports The Mirror.

Giving a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect this weekend and early next week, Met Eireann said: “Largely dry at first Saturday morning with sunny spells developing though with mist patches and a few light showers about. Cloud along with outbreaks of rain will develop in the south later this morning, gradually tracking northwards, becoming patchier as it does so. Some sunny spells will follow in the clearance. Highest temperatures of 11C to 15C with moderate, occasionally fresh southeasterly winds, easing later,” reports The Mirror.

“The last of the rain will clear the north early Saturday night, becoming largely dry and clear. However, there is a chance of cloudier conditions along with a little drizzle moving into southwestern fringes. Lowest temperatures of 4C to 9C. Mist and fog patches will develop in mostly light northeasterly or variable breezes, more moderate near southern and southwestern coasts,” reports The Mirror.

“Mist and fog Sunday morning will clear to leave a dry and sunny day. Highest temperatures of 13C to 16C generally, a little cooler near southern and eastern coasts, in light, occasionally moderate east or northeast winds. Dry Sunday night and mostly clear at first. Cloud will build from the north during the night. Mist and fog patches will also develop. Lowest temperatures of 3C to 7C with light, occasionally moderate northerly winds, freshening in the northwest towards morning,” reports The Mirror.
