Michael Healy-Rae criticises Government’s plan on their short-term letting restrictions

Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae has publicly disagreed with the Government regarding proposals to impose stricter regulations on short-term lettings.

Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae argued that short-term lets are unfairly being held responsible for the housing crisis and that the proposed restrictions will negatively impact communities reliant on tourism, reports Breaking News.

The proposed measures involve introducing a new national register and tougher planning requirements for short-term lettings advertised on platforms such as Airbnb, with implementation scheduled for mid-2026.

Mr Healy-Rae stated that many rural properties will not shift into the long-term rental market, reports Breaking News.

He told Newstalk: “Taking a property out of long-term let, and putting it into short-term, doing that… now I have a problem with that.

“But what I don’t like is moving the goalposts in the middle of the game. The traditional people who have been giving an excellent service, whether it’s Irish people going on holidays, or people coming from abroad… they’re providing a service.”, reports Breaking News.
