Microsoft signs $21 billion dollar military contract to supply augmented-reality headsets to American soldiers

Augmented reality is only really in it’s infancy on our smartphones but for military purposes it’s reached an advanced stage.

Proof of this can be found in the announcement that Microsoft has been awarded a massive $21 billion military contract to provide augmented reality googles to the Pentagon for use by US soldiers.

Microsoft will provide up to 120,000 of the headsets, dubbed the Integrated Visual Augmented System, or IVAS.

The IVAS can project holographic video-game style maps, thermal and night imaging, and target-identification information to soldiers. It can also show where the soldier’s weapon is aimed, and monitor vital statistics like their heart rate according to RT.

For anyone familiar with gaming, it looks like Microsofts Halo game was just a pre-curser to more lucrative military contracts.
