Midwives at hospital advised to use terms such as ‘chestfeeding’ and ‘human milk’ as part of trans-friendly policy

Midwives at a hospital have been advised to use the words chestfeeding and human milk instead of breastfeeding and breast milk as part of a new trans-friendly policy.

In a move to be more inclusive Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals have become the first hospital in the UK to introduce gender inclusive language.

According to information issued by the hospital, staff have been advised to use non gender specific terms as well as womanhood terms in order to make sure everyone is represented.

Amongst the changes staff at the now named perinatal services (maternity services) can use terms such as mothers or birthing parents, maternal and parental.

Other changes include replacing the use of the word “woman” with the phrase “woman or person”, and the term “father” with “parent”, “co-parent” or “second biological parent”.

Staff are also advised to use the terms chestfeeding and human milk when ever necessary.

In a statement announcing the changes the hospital say the new language is designed to be inclusive for all without diminishing the role women do play in childbirth.
