Migrant appears in court over alleged brutal assault of Dublin Bus driver

A man has appeared in court in connection with the alleged assault of a Dublin Bus driver, reports RTE.

Ionut Christian Biraz, a 39-yr-old Romanian national with no fixed address, who arrived in Ireland three months ago, is accused of assault causing harm to a 63-year-old driver at Beresford Place in Dublin city centre.

He is also charged with producing a weapon during the incident, which took place around 2pm yesterday, reports RTE.

He was brought before Dublin District Court.

Garda Katherine Ward raised concerns about the risk of flight, Mr Biraz’s lack of connections in Ireland, the seriousness of the charges, and potential risks to public safety, reports RTE.

The court was informed that the Director of Public Prosecutions has yet to issue directions, and that an additional charge may be filed.

Gardaí objected to bail based on the serious nature of the case, reports RTE.

Gardaí acknowledged, in response to questions from defence solicitor Eoin Lysaght, that Mr Biraz is entitled to the presumption of innocence. They also noted that English is not his first language, in reference to comments made during his interview.

The judge denied bail, reports RTE.

Mr Biraz, who followed the court proceedings with the assistance of an interpreter, was granted legal aid. The judge also ordered that he receive medical care while in custody.

He is scheduled to appear again at Cloverhill District Court tomorrow, reports RTE.
