Millions of people around the world watched a very special ceremony in Rome today as Pope Francis elevated Cardinal John Henry Newman to Sainthood.

The popular Cardinal was a convert to Catholicism and did started UCD college in Dublin, doing endless work for Ireland as a result.

Tragically, no official representative was sent by UCD to the canonisation today in Rome. Prince Charles was one of the most prominent figures at today’s ceremony, along with Bishop Robert Barron from America.

The Vatican has to approve two miracles for someone to become a saint. Cardinal Newman cured a man’s spinal disease and saved a woman and her unborn child from internal bleeding.

Cardinal John Henry Newman, who was born in London in 1801, was one of five people to be canonised today, including three nuns and a Swiss seamstress who was said to have the stigmata, the five wounds of the crucified Jesus.

In the year 2000, Boston man Jack Sullivan, was suffering severe back pain so prayed to Cardinal Newman to help him walk so he could attend classes to become ordained as a deacon, one level below priesthood.

Jack woke up literally the next morning and was completely pain free, which meant that he could complete his third year of classes.

Many people pray to (now) St John Henry Newman and St Therese of Lisieux for help in their daily lives.
