Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has stated that there are no link between the current fall in dairy prices and the lifting of dairy quotas.
Though the sharp drop in dairy prices came shortly after the lifting of dairy quotas, Minister Coveney has stated that the current crisis is a temporary problem unrelated to the new schemes, and that many farmers are happy with the removal of quotas.
He has stated that farmers should not be overly concerned as his Department, numerous co-ops and many farming organisations had predicted last year that 2015 would be a difficult year for dairy farmers and they have support available.
The Minister will travel to Brussels next week to meet with the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan to discuss the current crisis.
There are also plans to host a council of Ministers in September to specifically focus on the current issues with dairy prices in an attempt to rectify the current situation.
