Minister for Education: Schools will remain closed until further notice but the Leaving Cert IS going ahead

The Department of Education have announced that all schools and colleges will remain closed until further notice but that the Leaving Certificate is definitely going ahead.

It’s also now known that the Junior Cert will not be going ahead in its usual form but that an in-class test will occur when schools start back in the Autumn.

The Minister for Education Joe McHugh said:
“I’m acting as quickly as possibly in light of the updated restrictions advice. These decisions are being taken for the best of our children.”

McHugh went on to say:
“We are aiming for leaving cert to start in the last week of July or early August with a new Leaving Cert timetable to be in place by early June. We need to try and get students to sit their exams.”

He said that the students will need to sit in class before the Leaving Cert can happen but that all decisions are made taking into consideration public health advice.
