The Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, is not a very popular figure this afternoon.
It has emerged that he personally did not object to plans put to him by management at Bus Eireann to cut workers’ pay.
It has also been revealed that Mr. Ross was furnished with a very detailed briefing on the matter, and that he blithely waved it through. Unions were provided with ‘scaled-down’ version of the plan.
Management at Bus Eireann has said that it intends to reduce staff from 550 to anything between 400 and 450. Some of these lay offs may occur through redeployment or voluntary redundancy, however.
