The search for a 3-yr-old boy who disappeared from his babysitter’s garden ended in tragedy when his body was found in a pond.
On Wednesday afternoon, the remains of the boy, identified by police only as Harry K., were discovered in a pond at a Christmas tree farm 650 feet from his nanny’s home in Lowell, Massachusetts.
‘I want to be clear that we have no idea how Harry came to reach that pond, where he might have been or how long it might have taken him to reach that pond,’ stated Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan, reports the Metro.
The boy’s parents took him to his nanny’s at around 7am. Tuesday, police said, and at least one neighbor saw him playing in the yard around 9:15 a.m.
Shortly after, around 9:30 a.m. M., the boy’s nanny reported him missing. Police immediately began searching for him, with 200 officers, K9 units, helicopters, drone operators and mounted police officers dispatched to the effort.
Lowell Police alerted the community to his disappearance by using a reverse 911 system to contact residents and asked them to contact authorities if they had any information about the boy.
His body was found about five feet down at the edge of a murky pond that divers entered on Tuesday, WCVB reported.
The boy’s body was recovered just before 2 p.m. M., about 29 hours after last seen. He was found shortly after police defended their decision not to issue an Amber Alert because there “was no reason to believe” foul play was involved.
According to the police, the boy was probably wandered out into the woods.
