Mixed reactions to story that “far-right ‘plotted to kill Leo Varadkar’ and ex-soldier was the intended shooter”

It may now be disclosed that while Leo Varadkar was Tanaiste, a far-right plot to kill him was thwarted by the Gardai, reports The Mirror.

Upon discovering the plan against him in early 2022, Garda chiefs, according to an Irish Mirror investigation, reinstalled a full armed security detail. The worst danger to an Irish politician in decades, according to a source who informed us last night, “the plot was real and it was advanced.”

We have shown that when gardai learned of the far-right extremists’ intention to kill Mr. Varadkar, they acted to tighten security around him. The group was in the process of obtaining weapons for the assassination attempt, reports The Mirror.

We also now know that the planned shooter, a former soldier, was a member of the far-right group that orchestrated the scheme. According to sources, the individual was a one-time member of an elite foreign military unit rather than a former soldier in the Irish Defence Forces.

The scheme came to light while he was serving as Tanaiste, many months after he had given Taoiseach Michael Martin the reins of power in a Fine Gael/Fianna Fail power-sharing arrangement that saw each party hold the top post for half of the five-year plan, reports The Mirror.

When Mr. Varadkar was Taoiseach, he had a squad of armed Garda Special Detective Unit investigators, or a detail; however, when he was Tanaiste, that number was reduced to one SDU officer.

“He was briefed about that man,” a source said. When contacted, Deputy Varadkar told us: “On Garda advice, I cannot comment on security matters.” We also asked gardai for comment – but they declined, reports The Mirror.
