Police were forced to flee for their lives from Brixton on Wednesday night after a street party in the multicultural enclave turned into a riot.

The violence and public disorder were sparked after what police described as a “large unlicensed music event” led to officers being called who were then set upon by the revellers who injured up to 40 police men with more than 20 needing to be hospitalised.

Four police cars was also damaged during the disturbances, but only four arrests were made.

Videos posted by rioters, one of whom was brandishing a sword, show police retreating from the crowd of thugs, something that has become a common sight in the UK in recent years and months, particularly with the rise of Black Lives Matter protests.

The crowds eventually dispersed, at their own discretion, and the streets of Brixton were left littered with rubbish, bottles, glass, drug paraphernalia and makeshift weapons.

It is not confirmed but it is suspected that the revellers turned rioters did not respect the Covid-19 social distancing guidelines.
