A woman who doused her 20-month-old son with boiling water, leaving him with permanent and disfiguring scars, has been sentenced to nine years in prison, with the last two years suspended.
Judge David Keane admitted the woman was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the crime, although she did not meet the threshold for an insanity defence.
RTE reports that he said that mental illness can reduce feelings of guilt, even when the offender acted intentionally.
The woman, who cannot be identified to protect her children’s anonymity, was originally charged at her home on Oct. 9, 2019 with double attempted murder.
However, those charges were later dropped after the woman pleaded guilty to what is described as intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to one of the two children, reports the national broadcaster.
It’s understood that the child is now in care.
