Mother of 11-yr-old girl who took her own life settles legal action with the HSE

The mother of an 11-yr-old girl who committed herself eight years ago has reached a settlement in her lawsuit against the HSE, a general practitioner, and several providers of child and adolescent psychiatric care, reports RTE.

The family of Milly Tuomey, who committed herself in January 2016, received an apology from St. John of God Community Services in the High Court for not offering her treatment in a timely manner.

Fiona Tuomey filed the lawsuit to draw attention to the “woefully inadequate” mental health treatments available to young people because she felt that her dearly loved daughter’s voice was not being heard.

The settlement amount was €65,000, reports RTE.

When 11-year-old Milly announced on Instagram in November 2015 that she planned to pass away on a certain day, her family immediately sought emergency assistance.

Eventually, she was scheduled for a meeting with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services on January 30, 2016.

That meeting was, however, pushed up to January 5th when Milly’s mother discovered alarming items in her room, reports RTE.

After Milly went upstairs on January 1st, her sister discovered her a short while later, very ill. January 4th was her death date.

At the inquest, it was revealed that Milly had been depressed about the way she looked and had considered self-harm.

Mrs. Tuomey declared outside the court that Milly’s voice had at last been heard, reports RTE.
