A motion of confidence in the Taoiseach tabled by the Government has passed 86 votes to 55.

All parties were engaged in a lengthy debate which lasted well over 3 hours. The Dáil will remain in session for a few more hours to vote on some aspect of the water charges.

A motion of no confidence had been tabled by Sinn Fein, to challenge the Taoiseach’s authority and mandate on the country.

Enda Kenny has vowed to remain in office for the full term, until 2016.
