Motorists urged to be extra vigilant and to be on the look out for deer whilst driving during dark mornings and evenings

Motorists are being advised to be extra vigilant whilst driving during darker mornings and evenings and to be in the look out for deer.

The latest call for road safety comes as the National Parks and Wildlife service has teamed up with Mayo County Council to launch a DeerAware Campaign.

According to latest statistics it is believed there are between 400 and 500 collisions between drivers and the wild animals throughout the country every year.

The campaign which has the full support of road safety officer with Mayo County Council, Noel Gibbons, who said: “It’s rutting season for deer so we are appealing to motorists to watch out for deer crossing and to reduce your speed.”

“Particularly at this time of the year, light reduces and it is more difficult to see these animals on the road.”
