New regulations introduced today mean that motorists who overtake cyclists in a reckless or dangerous manner face a €120 fine.
Forty cyclists have died on Irish roads since 2016.
The increased penalty, championed by Minister for Transport Shane Ross, is hoped to raise awareness about the dangers faced by cyclists while on the road.
