An epidemic of the virus that causes mpox in Africa has been deemed a public health emergency of global significance by the World Health Organisation, reports The Mirror.
The infectious virus can be spread by intimate personal contact, causing fever and discomfort in the muscles before the affected individual develops big sores on their skin that resemble boils.
The clade Ib strain of the virus, which tends to transmit more easily through intimate contact and has a high mortality rate, has been connected to the most recent viral outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring countries.
What is multiple personality disorder (MPV), how does it spread, and what is the current infection rate in Ireland? Everything you ought to know about the virus is provided here, reports The Mirror.
Mpox: What is it?
The virus that causes monkeypox is the source of mpox. The WHO started referring to the disease as mpox instead of monkeypox in November 2022 in order to allay worries about stigmatisation because the virus does not genuinely originate from monkeys.
The virus, which is closely linked to smallpox, usually starts off as flu-like symptoms including fever, headaches, and muscular pains before developing into a rash that eventually develops into blisters packed with fluid, reports The Mirror.

The virus is mostly present in Central and West Africa, where a public health emergency has been proclaimed. It can spread by direct contact with an infected person or animal, contaminated bedding, and other materials. However, instances have been reported outside of these regions.
What mpox symptoms are present?
Though there are other symptoms that might appear initially, the enormous boil-like skin lesions that can grow on various body areas are arguably the most identifiable sign of mpox.
Headaches, fatigue, and muscular aches are some of the early symptoms experienced by an infected person. Severe symptoms include fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and rash that results in sores on the hands, feet, and face. The virus has the potential to be lethal, reports The Mirror.
Contact with an individual who has the monkeypox rash or contact with contaminated clothing or bedding can spread the infection.
How does mpox spread, and what can be done to stop it?
The two main ways that mpox is spread are through sexual contact and direct contact with an infected person’s rash, lesions, or body fluids.
In addition, the virus can spread by respiratory droplets during prolonged close contact and through contact with potentially infected items and surfaces, such as bedding or clothing.
The virus has previously been known to spread particularly among homosexual, bisexual, and other males who have sex with men. Close skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity is thought to be the mode of transmission, reports The Mirror.
