After receiving several knife wounds during an incident at Renmore Barracks in Galway on Thursday night, the army chaplain has thanked the public for their prayers and stated that surgery is on the horizon, reports RTE.
After the event, a teenage boy was charged – he allegedly was radicalised online by ISIS.
In addition, Fr. Paul Murphy expressed regret for not being able to answer every call that was directed at him.
Fr. Murphy wrote on Facebook, saying: “Friends, I appreciate your love, prayers, and concern. I apologise for not being able to respond to every message and answer every phone that comes in,” reports RTE.
The chaplain feels at ease since they have had surgery. Family members are near his bedside, it is understood.
Fr. Murphy has received the warmest regards from President Michael D. Higgins.
Taoiseach Simon Harris stated that Minister of Justice Helen McEntee has kept him updated on the probe.

“My thoughts remain with Defence Forces Chaplin, Fr Paul Murphy, and on behalf of the government I wish him a speedy recovery and want to thank the officers of the gardaà and Defence Forces for their response,” said Harris, reports RTE.
Micheál Martin, Tánaiste and Minister of Defence, praised the Defence Forces men for their prompt action in responding to the incident and denounced the “violent attack” on the priest.
The Tánaiste expressed his condemnation of the savage incident at Renmore Barracks last night in a post on X.
“I applaud the Defence Forces personnel who were on duty at the time; their involvement proved to be crucial. Our prayers are with the member of the Defence Forces who was hurt in the attack,” reports RTE.
Because the neighbourhood is often relatively calm, the locals characterised what transpired as startling.
“I perceived what seemed to be three powerful gunshots. There is a shooting range behind the barracks, so hearing gunfire wouldn’t be strange where I reside. But it was remarkable because it was after dark,” resident Max Kelly said, reports RTE.
“Then I heard sirens soon after and woke up shocked to hear a priest we all know in the neighbourhood was injured,” reports RTE.
Kitty Wheatley said, “This is a very quiet, peaceful area, there’s a lot of older people here,” while Fr. Murphy was described as “a lovely man.”
Michael Locals could “never in their wildest dreams” have imagined something like this happening, according to John Melia, reports RTE.
