Murder and drug charges issued for owner of New York daycare where child died

A New York woman faces manslaughter and drug possession charges after her 1-year-old son died of fentanyl poisoning and three other children at the daycare she ran became seriously ill, officials said, reports RTE.

Gray Mendez, 36, was arrested over the weekend after paramedics responded to a report of unresponsive children at Divino Niño Day Care in the Bronx on Friday.

Police said a large amount of fentanyl was found at the facility, including a kilogram of the drug placed on children’s play mats, reports RTE.

Four children under the age of three were taken to hospital, one of them died.

Ms. Mendez and Carlisto Acevedo Brito, 41, tenants of the apartment where the daycare was located, in New York state will face charges of murder, drug possession and intent to distribute.

They also faced federal drug charges in additional indictments that were unsealed Tuesday.

“Tragedy doesn’t begin to describe the events that took place at Divino Nino Daycare. This death and drug poisonings are every parent’s worst nightmare and clearly define the danger fentanyl poses to every New Yorker,” Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Frank Tarentino said in a statement.
