Murder trial hears shocking evidence that young mother of two was found “lying in a pool of blood” and suffered a “brutal death”

A murder trial has heard evidence that a young mother of two was found “lying in a pool of blood” and suffered a “brutal death”.

According to RTE, Jasmine McMonagle was just weeks from her 29th birthday when she was killed in Donegal.  Richard Burke, who is the father of Ms. McMonagle’s 18-month-old daughter, is currently on trial and has pleaded not guilty to her murder but guilty of manslaughter.

The Court heard that Gardai were only able to gain access to Ms. McMonagle’s house after a three-hour standoff with Burke.  During the standoff he wielded a meat cleaver at Gardai who needed to bring in a crisis negotiator to the scene.   RTE reports that Ms. McMonagle had been in an “on/off” relationship with Burke for six years.

Evidence before the Court included reports that the young woman had been strangled and that “blows rained upon her” leading to serious injuries to her body and head.

Her two children were in the house at the time and had not been injured.
