Met Eireann has issued a weather warning due to sub-zero temperatures gripping the midlands tonight.
The thermometer is expected to sink to about -4C in places, with widespread frost and ice formation expected.
The rest of Ireland will also be blighted by low temperatures of 0 to -3C. Coastal counties may see hail and heavy rain showers developing, making for hazardous driving conditions.
Cold weather conditions will likely remain until Saturday at least.
