National Women’s Council calls for appointment of more female ministers

The National Women’s Council of Ireland has said that Enda Kenny needs to act on his pre-election promises and appoint more female ministers in Dáil Éireann.

Following the most recent general election, more females than ever were elected to government. Eleven of those were Fine Gael TDs, and five were Independents.

Acting Taoiseach Enda Kenny pledged to appoint an equal number of male and female ministers if Fine Gael were successful in retaining their government position.

Louise Glennon from the National Women’s Council said it is time to honour that commitment.

“They quote a 50/50 balance, we’d be looking for, at the very least, a 60/40 balance, to reflect the increased number of women in politics and then also just to give a critical mass in terms of women’s voices around the Cabinet table,” she said.
