Netflix is set to launch a new documentary focused on the 2015 killing of Irish man Jason Corbett in the United States, reports RTE.
The 39-year-old father of two, originally from Co Limerick, was discovered dead at his home in Lexington, North Carolina in August of that year.
In 2017, his wife Molly Martens Corbett and her father Tom Martens were convicted of his murder, but the verdict was later overturned following an appeal, reports RTE.
The pair were released on bail while awaiting a retrial.
Ultimately, they reached a plea agreement with the District Attorney of Davidson County, pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in exchange for the murder charges being dropped, reports RTE.
During a hearing in November 2023, they were handed sentences of at least four years and three months, with credit given for time already served.
This meant both were released from prison in June 2024.
Netflix confirmed that the upcoming documentary, titled A Deadly American Marriage, will include interviews with Jason Corbett’s children, Jack and Sarah, as well as Tom Martens and Molly Martens Corbett, reports RTE.
The streaming service said the film “sheds a bright light on the many questions that have lingered since the shocking events of that night.”
Directed and produced by Jessica Burgess (Rich & Shameless, American Monster) and Jenny Popplewell (What Jennifer Did, American Murder: The Family Next Door), the documentary is scheduled for release on 9 May, reports RTE.
