Netherlands approves plans that will allow euthanasia for terminally ill children aged between 1 and 12




The Netherlands has backed plans that will allow euthanasia for children aged between 1 and 12.

In a move that Health Minister Hugo de Jonge says that children wouldn’t endure suffering hopelessly and unbearably, children under the age of 12 would be able to end their life with their permission and the permission of their parents.

The controversial issue which has drawn some criticism in the Dutch Government and from Christian groups those under the age of 12 would be legally allowed to end their life if they are terminally ill.

Although euthanasia is legal for terminally ill children over 12 years of age, under the current law there is no provision for terminally ill children under the age of 12.

De Jonge says the decision is being made on the basis of a study by experts.

He added that the decision to change the law would affect between 5 to 10 children a year.
