A number of MEP’s have ridiculed the election of the new EU Commission President who won the election in which she was only the candidate by just nine votes.

Ursula von der Leyen, the former Minister of Defence of Germany, was elected 383 to 327 but she was the only candidate on the ballot.

One UK MEP, Michael Heaver, tweeted “New EU Commission President wins a one horse race by 9 votes. Farcical.”

While others compared the EU’s parody of democracy to the ludicrous elections held in dictatorships such as North Korea.

British political activist and media pundit Raheem Kassam compared the election to meaningless elections that took place in the former USSR tweeting

“This is the EU’s idea of democracy. One candidate. No mandate. She now wields executive control of one of the world’s largest power blocs. This is Soviet level stuff”

von der Leyen herself is still under a serious investigation for corruption stemming from lucrative contracts she awarded to outside consultants without proper oversight, and whether a network of informal personal connections facilitated those deals during her time as Defence Minister.
