New figures show that the Government spent €14.5m on emergency accommodation for asylum seekers




The Department of Justice have reportedly spent a total of €14.5m on emergency accommodation for asylum seekers in the past year.

According to RTÉ News, newly published figures showed that the Department of Justice spent the figure on housing asylum seekers at hotels and B&Bs across the country.

The figures also found that there are currently 1,300 asylum seekers living in emergency accommodation in a number of locations around the country.

RTÉ News reports that figures for accommodation for international protection are expected to rise to €120m up from €78m in 2018.

It is believed that the rise in costs for emergency accommodation for asylum seekers comes the number of asylum seekers coming to Ireland has risen in recent years.
