Under new legislation introduced by the Government recently the Gardaí will be able to intercept text messages, emails and social media accounts of criminal suspects.
The new legislation which will see Ireland follow their EU counterparts will enable the Garda to co-operate with other police forces in tacking serious crime.
It us believed the new legislation, which will be officially introduced in the autumn, will cover WhatsApp, Viber and Facebook as well as emails.
