New legislation put forward in the Dáil that will see people given a 10 year prison sentence for deliberate ramming a Garda vehicle

According various reports it is understood that a proposed new legislation that will see an increase in penalties for ramming Garda cars has been put before the Dáil this afternoon

Under the new bill anyone who deliberately causes a collision with a Garda vehicle could face up to 10 years in prison. The new proposal has been put forward by Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin, who noted that 244 Garda cars were purposely rammed between 2010 and 2013. Mr Griffin believes there should be stricter sentences imposed on those who deliberately target a Garda vehicle, saying an attack on the Gardaí is an attack on the State.

Mr Griffin told the Dáil: “We need do everything possible to provide as much of a deterrent as possible to eliminate this risk. “It is probably an ideal thing to say this, to say you could eliminate this, but certainly I think we need to reduce the possibility of this happening.”
