New passport application rules will come into effect in Autumn 2017

If you are an Irish citizen intending to apply for a passport, you will be asked to produce a public service card from the Autumn of this year.

The card, which has been issued to around 2.3m people since it was first introduced in 2011, is linked to an identity database maintained by the Department of Social Protection.

You will also need to produce the card if applying for a driver’s licence from 2018.
