New Poll suggests 55% in favour of Scottish Independence – reversing 2014 result

A recent poll in Scotland has revealed that 55% of voters would support independence from the UK, the Herald (Glasgow) reports.

The result has been described as a ‘huge landmark’ by Business for Scotland who conducted the poll, with a spokesman saying it indicates that the ‘momentum is solid’ for Scottish independence.

In the 2014 independence referendum, 55% of Scottish voters decided to remain in the UK. However, these new figures suggest that these numbers have been flipped. Factors such as the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit are seen as catalysts for this new shift.

While PM Boris Johnson has made efforts to emphasise the value of union during the pandemic, many in Scotland were critical of Westminster’s response to the health crisis.
