New postcode system Eircode branded a “waste of time and money”

The recently implemented €27m project, which was first proposed over 10 years ago, has today come under heavy criticism from many commercial and business sectors.

Freight and courier companies, emergency services and other businesses have said that Eircode is a “waste of time an money”.

The system works by assigning a unique code to over 2.2 million homes, but it is the random nature of these codes that has raised concern.

Eircode assigns every house in the country a unique seven-digit postcode. The first three numbers will be a reference to the area where the property is located, while the other four digits correspond to a particular address.

Existing postcodes like Dublin 1 will become D01, while Galway gets H and Cork gets T.

Each code then that is generated for an address is random, meaning the code for properties next to each other have no relation whatsoever.

Some emergency operators have gone as far as saying that Eircode “will cost lives”.

And despite the fact that Eircode has been 10 years in the making, Minister for Communications Alex White said “We cannot expect to have the entire system finalised on day one.”
