New Ukrainians arriving in Ireland will be paid €38.80 per week but Ukrianians already here will continue to get €232 per week

Eamon Ryan, the leader of the Green Party, stated that Ireland cannot abandon the Ukrainian people while the war rages, reports RTE.

However, Minister Ryan stated that this would need to be done in a controlled manner, and this is reflected in the legislation that the Cabinet passed this morning to lessen support for new immigrants from Ukraine.

Talking on his way into this morning’s Cabinet meeting, Mr Ryan said: “We have to play our part … provide shelter and refuge but we have to do that in a way we can manage,” reports RTE.

The expenditure allowance for Ukrainians coming to Ireland in the upcoming weeks will be reduced from the present jobseeker’s rate of €232 per week to €38.80 per week.

In order to implement the government’s decision made prior to Christmas to lower welfare benefits for recently arrived immigrants from Ukraine, Minister of Social Protection Heather Humphreys presented legislation to the Cabinet, reports RTE.
