New York City police to start kicking homeless people out of the subway

New York leaders have pledged to kick homeless people from the city’s subway after a spike in subway violence since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mayor Eric Adams said he was ordering police and social workers to kick out anyone hiding in train cars and on platforms.

“The system was not made to be housing, it’s made to be transportation,” Adams, 61, told reporters.

Homeless people took shelter in the subway after shelters closed at the height of the pandemic in the spring of 2020 and workers stopped coming to offices.

The Mayor said that they’ll work with homeless shelters to try and house the homeless with a further 500 beds being made available.
